The Greatest Time of the Year

Christmas always gets the press doesn't it? For churches, it can be a seemingly drawn out duration of preparation, deliberation and decoration. But the funny thing is, Easter, an arguably more important time in the Christian faith, can often come across like the lesser of two seasons. In 2017 at St George's we sought to end the rivalry and bring Easter into the spotlight, to put the greatest week in human history back at the top of the seasonal podium.

Devised as a sequel to The Search, The Greatest sought to champion each milestone of Christ's walk from ruin to glory through a social media campaign and dedicated services. Each day during Holy Week (the week between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday) a trophy inspired by a key passage from the Bible was revealed online and complemented with a reflection for people to engage with.

These are no ordinary trophies however. Rather than statuettes or figurines, the items are focused around commonplace artefacts of the time, such as a simple leaf, a scroll, a vase or even a stone. They are the deliberately 'ungreat' discoveries of a week that confounds human understanding.

As part of the interior display of the church a podium was constructed to house each of the trophies and used throughout services.

For Easter Sunday, over 50 metres of bunting was created to litter the church in praise. The final touch to the celebrations was a 7 metre long illuminated cross. Made with 40 vintage-style bulbs, the cross gave off a vibrant morning glow that really had to be seen in person to be fully appreciated.
