The Big Banchory Theory: Phase 2

Following on from Phase 1, myself and the Head of Science Dr Matt Skellern undertook another experiment in the halls of Banchory Academy. This time our challenge was to showcase the big ideas of chemistry in a meaningful way within the corridor space.

First up was the atom.

Charting the many different models of the atom across the centuries, the wall illustrates the development of atomic theory from Dalton’s solid sphere to a modern day standard model. Each model lists the pros and cons for each theory allowing students to see our understanding as a work-in-progress.

In addition to atomic theory, the design also includes neat scientific discoveries and facts including a section devoted to the size and strength of the atom.

As the final part of this phase, we dedicated a space to the periodic table.

Our version of the table features 119 ‘branded’ elements with unique typefaces and symbols arranged in a wide format across a 10+ metre wall. Each symbol is crafted to the unique properties, usages or features of its particular element.

Some elements use typefaces that are inspired directly from famous scientist’s signatures.

As well as the table itself there are a number of visual challenges and quotes that further contextualise the infamous diagram.
