What if Schools were Palaces?

Unfortunately for many students, where they occupy the majority of their time in a day can be a dreary place to exist - plain walls, dado rails and hopeful noticeboards that never quite get used. It’s this problem that Dr Matt Skellern (Banchory Academy’s Head of Science) and myself wanted to challenge when we started a little experiment called The Big Banchory Theory.

The Big Banchory Theory (TBBT) aims to test the hypothesis that an improvement to a student’s surroundings will lead to an increased desire to learn and overall enjoyment of school life. Much like an actual scientific experiment ours followed a method. The first stage of this method was to raise the £17,000 needed to transform the space.

To do this we promoted the project heavily on social media, with a fun brand, promotional video and dedicated site, as well as hosting fundraising events and the inaugural Banchory Science Festival.

After 18 months we had reached our goal and now it was time to put our theory to the test.
