The Great Divide

The Great Divide explores the impact of separating parts of our lives into two camps — sacred and secular— and how this belief can become a life-denying barrier. Originally published in 2010, the publication needed an update to resonate with today’s audience. I helped reimagine it as a contemporary visual essay suitable for both print and digital.

Breaking the Divide

The divide is a hidden thread that runs throughout our lives, distorting and fragmenting the way we see our everyday lives. To accentuate this theme, the essay adopts distorted typography, fragmented photography and a strong red line that runs throughout the piece breaking up text and key points.

As readers move through the resource the notion of the divide gradually begins to be ‘pulled apart’. The peak of this breakdown occurs in the centre spread, featuring a wide pullout device. From this point, the narrative transitions from problem to solution, with the strong red line becoming increasingly fractured while the typography and photography used becomes increasingly whole.
